Where to Stay

Where to Stay in Rovaniemi for the Northern Lights

Sleep where the aurora hunts pick you up.

For aurora hunts and day tours, stay in Rovaniemi’s city center. The guaranteed Northern Lights hunt this site features meets at Koskikatu 22, most husky, reindeer and snowmobile trips collect from central hotels, and you can walk to dinner afterwards. Santa Claus Village, 8 km north, is the alternative for families who want Santa on the doorstep and a glass roof overhead. The splurge is a glass igloo or tree-house suite, either by the Village or out in the forest, where the sky is darker than in town. The airport sits next to Santa Claus Village, so the Village hotels double as airport hotels. The caveat: no hotel can promise the lights, and the igloo resorts sit outside the 10 km pickup radius some tours use.

Hotel facts, parking charges and prices were read on Booking.com on 26 October 2026; drive times are free-flow estimates and grow on snowy roads.

In the center, Book Lapland runs its aurora hunts from Koskikatu 22, Nordic Unique Travels works from Maakuntakatu 29 and Arctic GM runs its snowmobile safaris from its own office. Apukka Resort’s snowtrain, reindeer and family snowmobile trips send transfers to both the city center and Santa Claus Village, and the Sampo icebreaker day trip collects from the Santa Claus Village hotels before the drive to Kemi.

City center: walk to every tour

Stay here if the trip is built around tours. The meeting points are a few blocks apart, hotel pickups are free on most listings, and one operator’s evening hunt limits its pickups to accommodation within 10 km of the center, which every central hotel meets. You trade a dark sky for convenience: street lights wash out a faint aurora, so watch from the tour, not the window.

Scandic Rovaniemi City (mid-range) stands at Koskikatu 23, across the street from the Book Lapland office, with garage parking at €14 a day and no minimum check-in age. Arctic Light Hotel (luxury) is the boutique choice on Valtakatu, scored 9.3 from 1,641 reviews, with free parking. Arctic City Hotel (mid-range) on Pekankatu has two saunas and free parking, and Original Sokos Hotel Vaakuna (upper) on Koskikatu takes guests from 18 only and charges €19 a day to park. Santa’s Hotel Santa Claus (mid-range) at Korkalonkatu 29 is a short walk from the Korkalonkatu 23 aurora-hunt meeting point. See all stays in central Rovaniemi.

Santa Claus Village: Santa on the doorstep

The Village sits on the Arctic Circle, 8 km north of the center and a 10-minute drive from it. It suits families on a Christmas trip and anyone who wants one night under glass without driving into the forest. The trade-off is evenings: the restaurants and most tour offices are in town, so plan on taxis or a rental car, and check whether your tour collects from the Village before you book. Several Rovaniemi tours list it as a pickup point; others start only in the center.

Glass roofs and the Arctic Circle

Santa’s Igloos Arctic Circle (luxury) has glass-roofed igloos and free parking, and it was sold out for 10–11 February 2027 when we checked. Arctic TreeHouse Hotel (luxury) has forest-facing suites by SantaPark and takes guests from 18. Glass Resort (luxury) on Tähtikuja scored 9.6 from 353 reviews, the highest score we read, and also sets a minimum check-in age of 18. See all stays at Santa Claus Village.

Ounasvaara: the hill across the river

Ounasvaara is the fell east of the Kemijoki, 6 minutes from the center by car. You get ski slopes, forest trails and a view back over the city, but no tour office on foot, so it works best with a rental car or for travelers whose tours all include pickup. Lapland Hotels Sky Ounasvaara (upper) sits next to the winter sports center, scored 9.1 from 1,244 reviews, with free parking and a roof terrace. See all stays in Ounasvaara.

Igloo resorts: dark skies, longer drives

The resorts out in the forest are the only bases where watching from bed is a realistic plan, because there is little artificial light around them. Arctic SnowHotel & Glass Igloos (luxury) at Sinettä, 25 minutes west of the center, lists heated floors and thermal-glass roofs. Apukka Resort (luxury), 17 minutes northeast, runs its own snowtrain, reindeer and snowmobile trips. Both take guests from 18, both park free and both sit beyond the 10 km pickup radius, so you need a car or the resort’s transfers for city-based tours. See all stays around Rovaniemi.

Rovaniemi Airport: the Village is the airport district

The airport is 3 miles from Santa Claus Village and 5.7 miles from the center, so the closest beds to the terminal are the Village hotels, not anything in town. Nova Skyland Hotel (upper) at Tähtikuja 6 scored 9.3 from 834 reviews and was sold out for our February dates. Santa Claus Holiday Village (upper) has cottages with private saunas and kitchenettes, 4,711 reviews and free parking. For a late landing or a dawn departure, one night here saves the drive into town; for the rest of the trip, the center is closer to the tours.

Should you split the stay?

Split only on a trip of four nights or more. A night or two at Santa Claus Village or an igloo resort, then the rest in the center, gives you the glass roof and the walkable tour offices, and the move between them is a 10 to 25 minute drive. Put the Village or airport nights last if you fly out early, since the airport is 9 minutes away. On a two or three night trip the move costs an evening you would rather spend on a hunt; pick one base, and make it the center if you plan more than one tour.

Booking tips

Book the tour first, then the room. December and February sell out early on both sides: four of the hotels we checked had no rooms left for 10–11 February 2027 more than three months ahead. The featured aurora hunt cancels free up to 24 hours before departure, so you can hold a date while you settle the hotel. Its final start time is confirmed on the day, based on the weather, so keep that evening clear.

You do not need a car in the center. You do need one, or a resort transfer, at Ounasvaara and the igloo resorts, and roads in winter are icy and dark by mid-afternoon. Check the pickup line on every tour listing against your hotel’s address before you pay: “hotel pickup” can mean central hotels only.
